I’m having trouble writing a review of “The Wedding.” Where do I begin? The sex? There are plenty of recaps that focus on that. Perhaps I’ll start with emotional intimacy. Like the pages in the book, the episode was not solely about sex. Jamie and Claire really get to know each other on a deeper level (with the help of alcohol, of course). Their interactions are so awkward. I cringed and face palmed a few time. But all of this is good. The fact of the matter is that they do not know each other. Fate suddenly throws them together and they’re expected to make the best of it. They do make the best of it. They do find a deeper emotional connection. Bravo to the writer and director of the episode (both female, I might add) for showing how awkward first times are.
More importantly, I want to talk about how refreshing it is to see a female lead in a TV series that is sexual in a completely normal and healthy way. Claire isn’t afraid of her sexuality. It isn’t repressed. She has realistic expectations when it comes to sex and she has a healthy sex drive. She’s commanding, she’s present, and she’s an active agent in her own sexuality. I’m so completely thrilled with this.
Basically, the episode was just as I expected it to be: awkward, passionate, sexy, and funny.
